What we're hearing.

Session A - Young Adults

  • Self-motivation and procrastination are huge challenges. "I take responsibility for my success and for my failures. I am my own worst enemy and my biggest critic."
  • While many young adults felt that they could create impact in the local community, influencing bigger political changes at the system / government level felt nearly impossible.
  •  Support as a double edge sword: family support can be good for staying above water, but too much support can create an unhealthy reliance on family to provide everything without having to work for it.

Session B - SEIU Adults

  • Immigrants (especially refugees) have a leg up on people born in the community because of help they get from the government to start a business
  • STRONG belief in the union as being the key to their success—helping with every aspect of their life

Session C - SEIU Adults

  • They see a lot of unfairness in the system—they've been paying taxes for so many year and getting not enough social security, whereas some people just came to the country and are getting all the welfare and benefits.
  • One Catch 22 for care professionals is that they are only allowed a certain number of hours per week and are penalized if they do more
  • Once again, because they're part of the union they are SUPER active when it comes to voice -- said they do "it all"
